Whether you’re shopping or donating, you’re giving!

Everyday our trucks hit the road, traveling throughout Long Island to pick up donations from our generous neighbors. Many items that you may consider discarding could be donated to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul and ultimately used to help someone in need. Once we collect your used goods, they are either given away to people in need or sold at an affordable price at our thrift stores. The proceeds from our stores help maintain the year-round programs and services we offer to people facing hardship.

As part of our direct services program, our stores offer furniture, clothing, and other household items to people in need at no cost. This occurs when Vincentians discover during home visits that a family doesn’t have proper provisions for everyday living necessities, like a kitchen table on which to feed their children, or adequate beds to get a good night’s sleep. In these cases, a furniture and/or clothing request is submitted on behalf of the family by the Conference for the items needed. The family is then given a voucher to present to one of our stores that will be fulfilled by a helpful employee.

So you see…your used goods help us do much more good. Last year alone, our stores distributed $557,000 in goods to Long Islanders. Stop by and visit a SVDPLI store today. You never know what you may find!

What We Take

We accept furniture and other household items that are in usable condition and do not require any repairs. We will not accept items with that are broken, torn, missing legs or drawers, that have major stains or deterioration, or other similar damage that will make it impossible to utilize without making repairs.

We do not accept the following items:

  • Appliances
  • Baby Toys
  • Mattresses
  • Cribs
  • High Chairs
  • Medical Aids (Beds, Commodes, etc.)

The Society depends on donated goods to help us to serve the needy. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to cover the cost of repairs; consequently, we must reserve the right to refuse any item that does not meet our standards. Likewise, we pride ourselves on offering quality used goods at our stores and this is a tradition that our customers have come to expect.

We sincerely appreciate your kind offer to donate to the Society, and we trust that you will understand the reasons why we can’t accept certain items. In the event that you require additional clarification on what items are acceptable, please contact the store directly.
